Hoy - The Beginning

Tomorrow sees Mountain Equipment Pro partners Dave MacLeod and Andy Turner set out on their next exciting challenge.

Dave and Andy aim to climb The Long Hope Route on St John's Head, Hoy in a single day, freeing the final pitch up the headwall which Dave considers will come in around a hefty F8b+. Quite a challenge after 850 feet of sandy sea cliff and several pitches of E5 and above. This will certainly make it among the biggest undertakings in British climbing.

The Long Hope Route was first climbed in 1970 by Ed Drummond and Oliver Hill. They spent 7 days on the wall, sleeping on ledges and in hammocks, and several of the 23 pitches involved some aiding. A first free ascent was made by John Arran and Dave Turnbull in 1997, but this avoided the final pitch up the steep headwall, taking instead a slightly less direct line. Both ascents were landmark achievements for their time, both being onsight and showing real audacity in an unusually inhospitable environment. St John's Head is a 1000 feet of sandstone, making it the highest vertical sea cliff in the British Isles.


Alongside Dave and Andy will be friends of the brand - film maker Paul Diffley of Hotaches productions and photographer Lukasz Warzecha, so there should be footage and photos a plenty over the coming weeks.

Petzl picks?

Hey for those of us waiting for the new Nomics and Ergos to show I suspect we are getting closer to that fall 2011 delivery date!



Why would I say this you ask?  Well yesterday the UPS truck showed up unexpectantly with 4 brand new ICE picks for my Nomics!  I'm stoked ;-)  It is a great start for the new winter season.

The Dynafit TLT 5 as a winter climbing boot? Part 2

 The TLT 5s were new to Europe and North America this last winter.  The TLT's previous iteration of the same technology, the DyNA race boot, showed up in  the winter of 08/09.  But it took some convincing to for most to take the DyNA beyond the rando race circuit into the mountains and then snap a pair of ill fitting steel crampons to them.

But a few here in North America have already done and are still doing that.

You have to ask when does skiing become alpinism?  For me it is anytime a steel crampon and a ice axe is required.

The first time I saw a Dynafit with crampons snapped on them (Nanotech versions btw) was on Jared's and Andy's blogs.  I kept seeing traffic generated on my blog by:

So I stopped by a few times and looked around. It was all about skiing which to be honest hasn't interested me in some time.  BTDT and frankly was tired of the "new" gear and lack of new technology.  I had skied Fuhrer Finger and a couple of  the other routes back in the '80s and while fun no way I wanted to pack a pair of 207s and an extra pair of boots back up Rainier again.  I'd rather walk down.

First write up that really caught my eye on those "ski" blogs was a spoof of sorts about skiing the Great White Icicle in Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.  I had soloed it while at the OR show in 2010.  So I had a vague idea of what Jared, Andy and their partners were up to.  I thought they were nuts of course  but I started to take some interest.    I like "nuts" usually some fun to be had there  ;-)




Then a few weeks later I was off to Chamonix for  2 months. 
That experience was an eye opener with the the first spark of imagination coming from Jared and Andy.





"They" claim Chamonix is the death sport capital of the world. I won't argue that from my short experiences there. Either way I did see some amazing skiing and climbing. And I started to notice the new TLTs on feet. Pretty common on the Midi lift with climbers headed for the ice on the east side of the Tacul. Or on the first lift on the GM with climbers heading up the Argentière basin  for the big mixed routes there. Or just as likely on skier's feet with Rando race gear headed up Mt Blanc from the Cosmic hut for quick ascent and ski down.

A few guys in SLC, Utah were/are doing some incredible ski descents and mountaineering while doing it all very quickly.  A Teton Trifecta and the North Ridge of Baker come to mind from the blogs.  All wearing one version or the other of the TLT 5s.

In Chamonix and much of Europe there is a lot of ski mountaineering and Rando racing happening.  But skis are also used as a means of transportation and not always for a ski specific goal.  Some of the best alpine ice climbing is done in winter now. And using the Chamonix valley's many lifts  is well accepted as the "approach" and descent to many climbs.  AT boots aren't mandatory but they do make things a lot easier, quicker and safer at times.  And AT boot you can actaully climb and ski in with little down side for either activity is a new tool as some of us are now just beginning to realise.

Which version do you want of the TLT 5s?

That depends on how much cash you are willing to drop and secondly how much flex do you like in a ski boot?  But to be clear none of these are free ride boots.  No matter how good of a ski boot I think they are.

The new 2012 DyNA's will be the lightest by far but they also won't have the toe flex.  And the liner will be over lapping instead of a traditional tongue.  Great idea on the inner boot not so excited about the lack of flex for climbing.  All the new designs are rigid so it isn't something to bother the rando guys.   Weight and performance is going to be exceptional for skiing anyway.

The carbon cuffed boots offer some amazing skiing potential.  The Mountain version is slightly easier on the legs while walking and side hilling.  The Mountian versions ( TF in particular) offering just a bit more flex and a tiny bit lighter than the carbon cuffed Performance.   It is a tough choice.  But none of them are a "bad" choice imo.  For price and "mountain boot" performance the Mountian TF is the winner at the moment imo.
I am a big fan of the Palau foam liner in the Performance or the Mountain TF.

The tongue?
Both the Performance version and the Mountain version offer a removable tongue.  One is made of "stiff Grilamid" and Pebax, the other just Pebax if I am reading this all correctly.  Tongues that are made of a differing stiffness of  Pebax would be a nice option.   Jury is still out on whether the Performance and the Mountain use different materials in the tongue.  But I "think" the Performance tongue might well be stiffer than the Mountain's version,   A quote from TR thread, "In production the thickness of the cuff’s internal wall will be increased and the Pebax mix will be approx 20% stiffer.....the combination of the stiff Grilamid downhill tongue with the carbon cuff is impressive…"   "I'll have that specific info in a few days and re post the correct answer here."  Still no official word on the differences in tongues.  But my take is the SX black tongues are slightly stiffer than the DX green tongues.  May be +10% or more stiffer and a slightly more progressive flex with the black tongue.  But as I said, nothing official on this.  And it may well be my imagination as both weigh 80g per tongue.    Might be one way to easily add some rigidity to the flex of the Mountain version?   Most won't be climbing or doing skin approaches with the tongues in anyway.  Skiing on the other hand will depend on the boot.  Performance offers an amazingly high performance ski boot with the tongue in as well as tongue out.   The DyNA  doesn't have a tongue to add and the Mountain version will likely be skied with the tongue in place by most.  

I find the tongue easy to carry and add to or pull out of the boot as required.   It is easy to do so, but may be not a one handed operation for me.   I like having the option of the removable "ski" tongue in a "mountain boot" where double duty is required.   Bravo for Dynafit on that one.   I haven't required the tongue in the  boot while using the Performance version even on 105cm waisted, 188cm skis, as long as the temps are close to freezing.  The boots get soft in the heat I think.

Crampons?   What about crampons?

Steel?

Nels Nielsen in Colin's photos is using Black Diamond crampons.

Black Diamond crampons standard front bails fit the TLTs extremely well. Perfectly?  Very close anyway.   On the back heel pieces how ever the vertical tabs are too far apart on my TLT size 29.5s  to stop or center the heel of the boot.  I adjust them and clip them tight and they stay on.  Good enough I suspect.  Nels did several routes on the north face of les Droites with the BD set up.   Take a look at Neil's web site for some idea of where else he has use that combination. But all the current offerings from BD will work.  I am partial to the Neve heel mated to a steel front if it is something you can use because it is a little tighter in the heel.   I have yet to bend a regular set of vertical heel tabs to fit because I am worried about the stainless cracking.

Krister Jonson and Jared are both using the Grivel G20.  I use the G22.  The new Grivel front bail fits the TLT boots fairly well.  But not as good as the BD front bail.  And they can't easily be switched.  But the rear heel piece and vertical bars on the Grivel G20 and G22 crampons fit the TLTs exceptionally well.  I may yet add a pair of BD front bails to my Grivel G22s for this particular boot.

Krister is doing some pretty good mixed and water fall climbing in his set up as his photo gallery will attest.. 
If we can ever get Jared to slow down and use a rope on the technical climbing I suspect he might have some advice to offer ;)

Petzl?  For the same reasons the Petzl crampons fit most mountain boots better than the previous two brands mentioned they don't fit a ski boot very well.  The Petzl front bail is simply too small for the TLT toe.  The Telemark bail makes the fit even worse.  BD front bail, for once, wins the toe bail challenge with the TLT.





Aluminum crampons?

The Camp USA XLC versions all seem to fit very well but not perfectly.  Heel is still too big.  Lots of options there for the mountaineer including the Nano versions. Toe bails fit almost perfectly on my all aluminium XLCs, heels not so well but good enough.  

A few quick comparisons to the BD Prime @ 1770g and the TLT Mountain TF @ 1280g with the tongue and 1190g without.  (which skis about the same as the Prime but walks and climbs  infinitely better)


 

Comparing the volume of a La Sportiva Spantik and the TLT shell (Performance in this case)   Both at size 12 US both with warm, heat modable inner boots.  The TLT taking the lead on the better inner boot here.  But La Sportiva offers virtually the same Palau liner for the Baruntse that will work in the Spantik.

The BD Prime and TLT rocker comparison.  When it comes to walking the additional rocker built into the TLT 5 and its short over all sole length means a lot more comfort.



 TF thermo formable foam liner and TFX liners which can in part be thermo moldable.
An obvious issue I worried about, is the skis chopping up the inside of the TLT shells in short order.  But Dynafit tells me this is common place, with extra material built in to take the abuse.  In the USA the Dynafit demo boots have held up fine to this kind of issue with zero failures to date.

Typically my boots don't get that cut up in a full season of skiing.  But it is expected wear overtime.  Gotta say I am now trying to keep this sort of damage to a minimum.  It is scary when you realise how thin the boot shells are, every where but this part of the lower shell.

Skinning and skiing in spring snow for two days started taking the logo off.

Inner boot and cuff wear happened pretty quick as well.  But Dynafit tells you to expect it and gives you patch material to add some durability to the lwt boot and liners.  Buckles have been an early  and continued  issue for some owners.  The front one is easy enough to bend or loosen if you aren't careful and smack a rock booting or on skins.  I noticed the new DyNA has a slightly different lower buckle.  One of the early NA testers admitted to disabling a Performance version by knocking off an upper buckle while booting early season.  Think of it as a "race boot".  Treat them gently is my thought and plan on something to fix them if broken in the mtns.  Main buckle is easy with some duct tape and a rubber ski strap.  I suspect a rubber ski strap would work just fine on the lower one as well.  But you get the idea hopefully..be gentle when and where you can be.  Hammer them and forget about it when you can't.  No question there are more durable traditional boots for use in the alpine.  Just none that will do as much so easily.


Skinning had wear points showing up on the inner and shell liner very quickly.  Best to keep a sharp eye on it all.
I do have a long way to go before my own boots will see the mileage and abuse of Jared's after two full seasons though.  So I am not worried...yet ;-)


And so how do they climb?  On ice as good as anything I have used if you can deal with the little or no side ways ankle flex.  Same sideways flex as a typical plastic boot just less of it because the boot cuff is higher.  That will make them hard on your knees if used enough.  In the mid '80s we found that out using Scott ski boots with Vibram soles glued on to ice climb in. 

  Not the best mixed boot obviously because of that.  But for pure ice or endurance ice...lock the cuffs up and off you go.  Easy to keep your heels down with the forward lean built in ;-)  Even climbing with the cuff undone as you would skinning or walking the boots offer plenty of support for snow and ice climbing.

Just another tool for the box.  But the next time you need ski boots a good one to look at if you ice climb as well.  This from a guy who admittedly HATES climbing in AT boots.....really hates it.  Up until the TLT 5s showed up that is!

Now if they would only put all that energy into a full on mountain boot that also just happened to ski really well ;-)
We'd then have another pair of boots that are worth a $1000!

The TLT 5 Dynafit series Part I of 2

The Dynafit TLT 5 Series as a all mountain cold weather boot?

The Intro and the players:
Ok, I am the first to admit this is one of the most fun blogs I have researched and written to date. Huge fun for me because it gave me a reason to get back into some skiing and to look at how I climb and why in the process.   The TLT did take some effort to "use my imagination" as to where it might be used best.

So it is a bit long winded before the goods are delivered. Or I can simply cut to the chase... if you ski and climb you'll want some of these!

If you haven't paid attention the ski industry has changed a lot in just a couple of years.  Fat skis, tech bindings (which are the various clones of the original Dynafit) and super light weight ski boots that you can also easily tour in, skin in and more importantly to me climb in.

All of the major European boot manufactures seem to have a super light AT boot out now.  Quick look at the top four here shows some differing ideas in technology and kenetics.






In no special order and I have likely missed someone, Scarpa, La Sportiva, Dynafit and may be most importantly Pierre Gignoux, who seems to be driving the others to catch up with his technology. Pierre Gignoux's first boot in 2006 weighed in at 650g!



"At the time it weighed 650g per boot and was nearly half the weight of the Scarpa F1 (1200g).
The 2008 XP 500 were down to 520 g per boot without liner in size 27.5.
This year, the new XP 444 shell weighs a cool 444 grams in 27.5"

Note the Gignoux boot weights are without the liners...not the best data but then I don't have a pair of $2000+ Gignoux boots to weigh for you, sorry ;)

Dynafit claims the new DyNA will come in at 700g with the liner!  Dynafit TLT 5 liners weight in at 160 to 180g.   So call it a 550g shell to be on the safe side. That should be good enough for my use ;)

Some perspective here?   The newest DyNA will be 1# 8oz (24oz) per boot.  The trango S Evo is 1# 13oz (29oz)  per boot!   That is a warm thermo formable plastic dbl boot you can ski and climb technical ground with that is lighter than a pair of Trango Evo S!    A Spantik with a similar Palau liner is 2# 12oz (44oz).  That is saving 1# 4oz per boot!   3# pre pair for the DyNA.  The Spantik with a lwt liner is 5# 8oz a pair.
(I'm very excited here with what might yet be possible)





Bottom line here is there is some amazing ski boot technology available to day......but it is literally "at a price".

Like many reading this I suspect you are more interested in how the boots skis and climb and  more importantly just how much they will cost you.  The original DyNA has been out two seasons now.  The TLT5 Series just one full season.  With much of the US inventory coming in later than anyone would have preferred.  I was slow to recognise the benefits of these style of boots for both skiing and climbing.  But I also wasn't interested until the prices dropped on line at the very end of the 2010/2011 winter season.

Adding a $1000 ski boot or even a $700 ski boot to my gear room no matter how good they ski or climb is not a easy or likely decision.  On sale at 40% off...not easy but way more likely.   $1300 and up?  For a ski boot? Not likely to fly at my house.

I have been skiing in all three of the TLT boots for the last couple of months.  Crazy I know but I thought the new technology was important enough to make the effort.  Boot models and their retail prices are listed below.  Shop around.  I believe you'll find most retailers willing to match online prices.  As the Euro gained value against the US dollar this spring the price of these boots plummeted until even I felt happy with the purchase.  I wouldn't be surprised how ever to see these boots at retail again in the fall and because of the increased demand here in North America hold their  original retail prices well.  Take that as a warning if you are looking for "cheap" boots.

In the grand scheme of things the North American market is tiny compared to the demand in Europe for these boots.  I suspect that will change.

"We knew going in that the DNA skied awfully well for a super lightweight. With the additions for better skiing performance on the TLT series, we expected more downhill fun. The fact that it skis better than the DNA is not surprising, what was surprising however was that for a boot that only weighs 1050gr, it can power pretty much ANY size of ski with fairly solid precision. The carbon cuff has a lot to do with that as it has extraordinary torsional stiffness. But even with this stiffness, there was absolutely no shin bang or abrupt stiffening of the flex curve. Rather the flex is smooth all the way thru, linear but with solid support throughout. When you need to really drive the ski edge and put some power down, the boot doesn’t give up on you. While it is NOT a Titan in power, it is as good or better than most typical touring boots in the 1800 gram range. We skied on Movement Goliaths, the new Dynafit Stoked, Manaslus, G3 Zen Oxides, G3 Tonics, BD Justice as well as some lightwt speed touring setups like Movement Randoms and Dynafit Seven Summits SLs. We skied these combinations on ice, powder, spring-like corn, slow speed and ripping groomers. With the bigger skis, pushing the speeds on hardpack would eventually challenge the TLT’s, but most AT boots are challenged at this level. In every combination to a lesser or greater degree the boots were very comfortable with excellent power transfer. The only area that they have a “different” feel is with the Activ-Flex. This 5 mm of flex in the forefoot, makes the boot almost feel like it has a damper installed in the feedback loop from ski edge to the soles of your feet. The Scarpa F1 series with a bellows are particularly vague in this feel and sensitivity. The TLT has a much more positive feel underfoot, but this is an area where it differs from a pure rigid sole AT setup. Some people may not like that feel and not want to make the compromise. But given the extra efficiency gained in stride, personally, we feel it is totally worth the small amount of desensitizing because the power is still there."

"A tech boot like the TLT5 needs a little more attention from the skiers, it's definitely not a super user friendly product and it was not meant to be... most of the parts used are coming from the DyNA that was a ski running race boot so every part was tuned to save weight and targeted to skiers which are used to paying a lot of attention to their gear..."

As  reference the lightest AT boot in the Black Diamond line is the Prime.  The Prime in a 28.5 mono weighs in @  1720g.  But no where near the flexability of the TLT 5 flex in walking mode.  They are ski boots so lets compare how they fair against the Prime.  It is. "all about the down" after all ;)

As a reference.  Not uncommon for me to ski the Prime unlocked at the hinge.   So it should be obvious I am not adverse to riding a soft boot.  BD rates the Prime at a 110 locked up.  Certainly not a super stiff boot even then. The BD Factor is rated as a 130.

Here is how I think the boots pan out from the softest flex to the stiffest boot.

 Another quote from the TG thread:
"For fit comparison, i've also tried on the Maestral and BD Prime. The Prime forefoot was wider and lower than either the maestral or TLT5. The Prime also had a nice heel pocket. Not as nice as the TLT5 tho. The maestral heel was quite roomy.
The TLT5p is the stiffest of the 3. Prime second and Maestral softer still. Didn't like flex progression of Maestral either, it would flex forward and abruptly become stiffer. The Prime is nicely progressive. I'm wondering how much stiffer the pebax Prime becomes in the cold and whether the TLT5p stiffens up as much...thinking the carbon cuff isn't as affected by temperature?

More on the walk mode of the TLT5 later.  But no question the TLT 5 is best walking ski boot currently available under $750 retail.

There is no question the Pebax cuffs are effected by temperature change.  Very warm spring temps are the only place I have ever wanted a tongue in the Perf for extra control.  The kind of lift day where everyone is in short sleeved shirts and shorts.

But within a few degrees of freezing the Pebax/carbon cuffs seem plenty stiff.   I didn't notice much of a change in flex once the boots were out in below freezing conditions.  All the boots seemed consistent in their flex at 0C or -20C.  Get them warm however and you'll have "slippers" to ski in.  So much for a "rug test" in the shop as to how the boot will flex while skiing.  Cuffs on the TLT5 Mtn are Pebax.  Cuffs on the Performance are a combo of Pebax and Carbon fiber.

There ia a lot of information on the Internet on how the original DyNA skiis as well as how the Mountain  and Performance versions of the TLT 5 ski.  Part of  Dyanfit's advertising fro the TLT 5 Series is "SKI MOUNTAINEERING WITH NO COMPROMISES".  I have to agree.

Little compromise in the TLT 5 Performance boot for skiing..let alone the limit of ski mountaineering.
Do a Google search if you wnat to see what others think of the TLT 5 as a ski boot.

The reason I have repeated Dynafit's spiel here and left out the Mountian TF-X is I am interested in the warmest and lightest versions of the TLT 5 boots.  If you want to ski in them more than climb get the Performance version.  The carbon fiber cuff is stiff.  99 % of my ski boot use of the Performance TLT is done with out the additional tongue.  I am skiing everything from 110cm under foot, 190cm fatties to 78cm under foot 160cm mountaineering skis.  The Performance TLTs will ski.  But the upper cuff is stiff and walk enough in them or side hill long distances and it ain all that fun.

The Mountain TF on the other hand skis well.  But in nasty conditions I prefer to add the tongue.  And I generally prefer a softer boot.  But with out the tongue the slightly softer cuff and no tongue makes the Mountain TF a good compromise for walking, long side hills and climbing.   You get a bit of flex that makes long days  easier on the feet and knees.  It doesn't take much.

One of the things that the TLT 5 series have for the moment is a bit of flex that not all AT boots have.  It isn't much (5mm?) but it is enough to notice after a long day in stiff boots.  The newest DyNA version has left the flex feature out.  It is an advantage in a climbing boot imo.  Disadvantage in a ski boot, plus the added weight is the reasoning behind that change.



The Dynafit toe flex design that allows for a rigid sole boot for skiing, but flexible boot for walking.  And imo the missing link for plastic climbing boots  Simply brilliant..

The other thing that is important imo as a climbing boot is it's volume.  I have long thought most climbing takes place in an environment where a light weight dbl boot would be enough to keep cold damage at bay and be enough for the majority of climbing where you need more than a single boot but less than the most current crop of high volume double boots, like the Spantik, Baruntse or 6000.  Dynafit's use of the light and extremely well fitting Palau thermodable liner helps here.  It is a low volume foam liner that is easy to dry and exceptionally warm for it's weight and amount of insulation. 

Think the volume of the Kolfach plastic boots. Although it is actually less and a more anatomical shape.  Just 30 years newer technology and in this case the priority on skiing instead of climbing.   But the technology is good enough to be applied to technical alpine climbing as well.  For the alpine ice climbs that involve a ski approach it is a system that is hard to beat.

At least in the Performance version and with the tongue installed it is also a boot I would use on something like the Cunningham.  Although admittedly buckled up a bit tighter than normal  ;-)  A good skier could use  either of the TLT Mountain versions easily enough.
